Google Chrome Operating System, gOS

So it’s official now and all over the news networks (even all of the financials): Google is coming out with an Operating System. I welcome the talk of such a feat, because this is the first time I have heard such discussion about people having alternate options on an Operating System. It is such a great idea to replace the desktop Operating Systems which were created for the 1990’s technology, with a more Internet-friendly OS for users.
Yes, Microsoft has a 90% market share, but I think this is a great direction for technology and personal computing in general. The dependence of Internet-only programs may be a turn-off to some, but I like their thinking. Read below taken from the Google Blog post which broke the news networks yesterday,
As people use more and more web applications, the operating system becomes less important and it makes no sense to pay for it. The desktop mail client could be replaced by Gmail, the calendaring application could be replaced by Google Calendar, the office suite has lightweight alternatives: Google Docs and Zoho, it makes more sense to use an online feed reader like Google Reader, your scientific calculator is less powerful than Wolfram Alpha and you’ll rarely need a video player when you have YouTube, Hulu and other video sites.
The best part is it’s Open Source. It’s like the power of Linux and all of their flavors (I’m currently typing this on a Ubuntu flavor of Linux), but giving what an Open Source Operating System needs: great marketing. Now the ideas behind Linux can be distributed to a much more larger audience due to the marketing power Google has. Just what the Open Source movement needs in my opinion.
